Tried this firmware with a factory reset but my problem persists. Namely that our iPhone 6's sometimes don't reconnect after coming home. I realized this when I bought this router a month ago. Pressed the home button and noticed 3G in the upper left and 2 seconds later it connected to wi-fi. This is on both 2.4G and 5G a/c. After that the phones remain on the network indefinitely. I started to monitor it via the web interface and sometimes they reconnect but most of the time they don't. Even after restarting the router the phones fail to reconnect at times. With an iPad Air 2 (supports mu-mimo) the 5Ghz band is unstable when the device sleeps. It drops connection every 1-2 minutes then reconnects so I have to use it on 2.4Ghz unfortunately. Must add that all devices are on iOS9 DP5 but looking at the developer forums and other sites I cannot find anyone with the same problem so I suspect it is router related. All beamforming options are disabled.

Isn't this normal for iOS? My devices did this even when I had the Apple AirPort Extreme. See here. Which is different to Android which always show that they are connected.

I had the AC56U previously and the phones always reconnected and remained on the network for as long as it was alive. :) After the connection they remain on the AC87U too but coming home from work I have to "manually" connect them. Also I had a iPhone 4s (iOS 5-7) with 2nd gen. Airport Express and it reconnected every time.
 
So I have been messing with AP isolation on/off for hours. Whenever its off, I get disconnected within seconds... Whenever its on, I get none. I am bridging the N66U to the AC87U right now, I didn't get a chance to try the laptop.

Anyone would have any explanation as to why such thing would happen? Hardware issue? Environment? Although there are no other 5ghz routers around my area and only a few devices... I wonder if its fixable... I do need AP Isolation to be off.
 
The quantenna chipset is a total mess and i doubt it will ever get worked out as Asus has already stopped using it on future routers like the AC88U that will replace the 87U very shortly. They should recall the 87U and give everyone there money back. o_O

This is not a solution. Despite whatever that chipset is or whether or not Asus is planning to use any of those in the future, the problems must get fixed. Quantenna have to ensure that it will be as reliable as the 5GHz wifi on the previous Asus AC routers or as the one on the AC3200. We cannot accept operating any flawed router that performs worse only because Quantenna's chipset is inside.

Therefore, we'll have to wait and it will get fixed. Quantenna are working on it - this is obviously one of their most advanced chips and the company is specialized in developing those.
 
That should have happened before QTN chips getting inside consumers routers, not after.

IMO, they should have done all those exhaustive tests, verifications, debugging or whatever before making users alpha testers, users who payed a good money for a incomplete/faulty product, after 1 year now on the market theres no excuse for these, all should be already working fine by now.

Offcourse theres always issues here and there on all models manufacturers but RT-AC87U is already known by the worse motives.

It happened the way it happened in order to be the first to release an 802.11ac Wave 2 chipset to the market.

Testing takes time and if you want to be first it's better to skip that part.

That's just my assumption btw.
 
Better being the last ones then, being the first this way it not something that will bring them good reputation for sure.

It's just great having a Wave 2 AC router when its goofed "all over the place" ah? Not :(

Coming up on its one-year anniversary since launch. I have to say that the effort I've put into this marginally functional router absolutely has not been worth the $280 or whatever it was at launch. Many of the marketing tags on the box itself from back in 2014 still aren't yet enabled.

The irony was that the 2xxx series of firmware was very solid for me-- even beamforming seemed to work. The Quantenna driver is just getting progressively worse-- I guess as they try to meet overly optimistic marketing obligations. It's beta hardware, we're all testers, and a proper QA process would have weeded out this architecture long ago.

But I guess at the end of the day it's serving up Internet, just with lots of caveats for mobile device support and stability. Live and learn.
 
My guess is we're all just a little bit skeptical that this is actually going to be the one that makes this router usable. I'm anxious to get a working stable firmware for this router so I tried out this update and have been running it on my AC87U since it was posted. Trying not to jinx this thing, but so far it's running fantastic. My 5GHZ is fast, completely stable, and has great range. No drops or slowdowns since the update.

I can usually tell if the network is dropping connections by connecting my work computer to my company VPN. In the past my VPN was constantly re-connectiong, and eventually I wasn't able to connect to the 5GHZ network at all. And the 2.4 slowed down considerably over time. The only thing that fixed the issues was a reboot, then I'd go through the process all over again.

Fingers crossed, but so far extremely happy with this revision. In the end, time will tell.

Just an update, between 24 and 48 hours the wifi really starts to slow down. Pages don't load quickly at all and any type of online gaming is a no-go, causes way too much lag. I'm not surprised, this router has been a mess since day 1. But it is progress, I have no more 5GHZ disconnects and within the first 24 hours it's extremely fast and reliable. I wish I could program a daily reboot on "stock (beta)" firmware. Not sure if anyone's figured that out. I know there's a way to do it on merlin.
 
Personally I went back to the official 7410 beta for now, this beta is just a little bit to unstable for me on the 5Ghz band.

Really? I've only been running it for about 3 days, but so far it's the best release yet for the 5Ghz. My devices are actually working properly now, no slow downs as yet...
 
So what's the verdict on this beta?

Been running it now for about a week. Personally, I've found this to be the best firmware yet from the 5Ghz side of things.

I have noticed once or twice the old slow-down woes, where a game on my phone can't connect to the server for example, but disconnect the wifi and everything works. But overall, it's a great improvement! The 5Ghz is now actually usable!

Hopefully the small bugs will now be ironed out by the time the public version is published.

There are of course some GUI bugs in this beta, but not a big deal and should be easily fixed by the final release.

Same here, this version is by far the best firmware for this router to-date (for me anyway). I even got courageous enough to set some QOS settings as I'm set to start streaming college football over the weekend. So far so good.

Once I get the slow down's I just do a router reboot and it's back to normal.

But 5GHZ is completely stable (as far as disconnects go) which already makes me happy. I've put the R7000 back in the closet for now.
