The one good thing is that I keep notes on new things like this, so I don't have to make anyone go through this again in case I need to do this in the future

I had posted the question about the google safesearch, but it didn't really go anywhere... I will repost the script you help me fix for Merlin and hopefully it will help the OP on that other post

Seems to be the long way around to me.
Here's how I would approach this.

Install putty, Notepad++, and WinSCP.
Enable SSH in the router admin page.
Open Notepad++ set the line ending to Linux
Create the file, save the file, make sure the line ending is set to Linux.
Open WinSCP. Start a session to the IP of the router (Host name 10.10.100.1)
In the right hand window navigate to whatever directory you want on the router.
In the left hand window navigate to wherever you saved the file you want to send to the router.
Right click that file and upload it.
In the right hand (router) window, right click the file, choose Properties, mark all the permission checkboxes.
Now you can click the Commands menu in WinSCP and choose open terminal. Enter whatever command you want.

End the WinSCP session and close it.
