Dropouts on ASUS RT-AX86U

I've had my RT-AX86U for about 18 months and has been working just fine, but over the past month I've experienced a number of dropouts.

I've contacted my ISP who were less than helpful, so I've started my own investigation and wondering if anybody had the same experience.

I've got a RT-AX86U using Merlin firmware 3004.388.8_2

running a ping to google.com, I would see frequent timeouts, then looked at the WAN interface which showed the following issues

Looking at the logs, I did notice a few issues, but not sure how to address it. First, I've shutdown my OpenVPN server to see if that helps. I'm also using my older ASUS RT-AX68U as a Mesh but it seems to be working ok.

Is there anything I can try or a setting I've missed?

You need to look further back in the log for the "WAN(0) link down" messages and see if there's any other relevant messages around that time.

Try replacing the ethernet cable between the router and modem (or ONT). Also check the logs on the modem.

There is nothing in the logs that indicates that WAN(0) is down, in fact I can't find any reference to WAN at all.

I've replaced the cable and I've also turned off OpenVPN to see if that resolves it.

Constantly get dropped packets, no idea if it's the router or my ISP box, how do I tell where the problem is?
