Does the Adaptive QOS and game boost really do anything? I have TWC internet and my speed are 300 down and 20 up, so I am wondering if I should I use QOS or just leave it off. I have been doing some reading and alot of articles say that it really does not work. So I am wondering if there is any benefits from using it or not. Your opinions please.

Thanks in advance guys.

I too am on TWC at 300/20. I formerly used an Asus RT-66, and now use an Asus RT-3200 which I've had for close to a year. Never used either QOS(whether adaptive or traditional), nor game boost. Our home has in excess of 25 devices connected at once, and often when we have friends or family over, as many as 50 devices. Have never had any need to run QOS, ever. Streaming, data transfers, downloads, you name it, never an issue without QOS. Of course, YMMV, so as SFX says, test and see if there's any difference. I have observed none, and thus run without either one enabled.

I can't speak to the Game Boost my 87U doesn't have it.

I however do use the Adaptive QoS on it. Not because my bandwidth is limited though, I have plenty of it. I use it to mitigate bufferbloat. It does a very good job of doing that if you set it up correctly.

Correct settings meaning setting your ups and downs to around 95% of their respected rates.

So in the adaptive QOS if I just color code, lets say just my game consoles to red which is the highest and leave the rest as default. What happens to the devices that are not color coded? Will they eat up my bandwidth since they are not priortized, or do I need to color code them too?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the color codes on the Bandwidth monitor page? Never really understood the purpose of the tags on that page. Hopefully someone can explain. I just use Adapative QoS with a custom settings for the priorities.

QoS only matters if you are saturating your connection and causing a sizeable buffer to be created.

Unless you have an obvious problem that you are quite sure QoS can solve, I would leave QoS disabled.

I have about 20 devices that are on my network, most of the time its 3 ps4's and a gaming rig going on at the same time and your regular web sufing, netflix at times.. We dont do bit torrents or have nas stuff, were basic users, but we do game alot so that is why I am asking these questions. Thanks for the input.

Can you explain this a bit more if you can, thank you.

Sure.

So, I have no idea what the tags on the Bandwidth Monitor page are for.

On the Adaptive QoS page under the QoS tab though I have it set for Adaptive QoS the limits are set for 95% of my maximum speeds and I setup a custom QoS order for the traffic prioritization. The 95% of your max speeds reduces bufferbloat that would help with your online gaming lag. Bufferbloat is basically when the router is trying to send more traffic to the modem then it can handle at one time because the router assumes it's faster than it is. Setting the maxes to 95% stops the router from creating a bottleneck there. You can test for bufferbloat on dslreports.com/speedtest

It sounds like you would just want to select Game though that would work for you.

Those settings will ensure that you gaming traffic form the PS4's and the PC get to use the available bandwidth before someone using Netflix or browsing the web.

Your settings would be something like 19 for the up and 285 for the down compared to my 4.5 and 45.

Thank you man.^^^^^

You're welcome.

So I have been doing some testing on this and I followed your advice. So I have I put in 285 down and 19 down and ran a dlreport speedtest. I got C on bufferbloat and A's on the rest.

The weird thing is that no matter if I input lets 95 down, 19 up, my speedtest are still showing 354 down and 24 up???

I have tested it out with diffrent numbers and still when I run a speedtest I will get 354 down 24 up, maybe it does not really work, I dont know, but I just find it weird. I would think that my speedtest would be lower but its not.

Thanks in advance.

Input your settings and reboot the router. If can take a few minutes for QoS to activate. Make sure you are hitting apply obviously also.

Yeah did that every time I changed the up and down numbers.

That's odd I definitely notice my speeds being limited when I change mine.

Have you tried setting them to 19 and 285 and applying then waiting 10mins and doing to dslreports test?

What firmware version are you running?

I will restart again and wait 10 mins and see. I am running Merlins FW, 380.50
