So yesterday I returned the RT-AC87R at bestbuy. I was having major issues with loss of connection on both 2.4 & 5g wireless signals and also it was rebooting alot on its own too, I was running the merlin fw on it.

With that said I picked up the RT-AC68P, I use to have the AC68R router and it was very dependable never really had issues with it, always used the Merlin FW on it.

Well with the ac87r, I used QOS features and it worked great no issues, at all other than what I have all ready mentioned.

Now with the RT-AC68P, if I use QOS and set up my speeds which are 324 down and 24 up and try to run a speed test I get really different speeds?

With QOS on I get 224 down & 24 up, my download speed changes drastically, I do not know why??

I use QOS because I have a house hold of many devices and gamers so QOS really does help when playing online games and everyone else is netflixing or doing other stuff.

So I am wondering why with the AC87R I had no issues and now with this AC68P I am having issues. I might add that with the AC68R I also never had these issues with QOS.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Double-check everything. QoS configuration needs to be perfect. Make sure the downstream is not being artificially limited by some QoS setting. Set the download speed to unlimited or something similar.

For most QoS setups, only upload speeds need to be controlled/limited.

Your router's CPU should be more than enough to handle your QoS needs, so I can't explain the QoS slow-down you are experiencing.

When you enable QOS, it automatically disables hardware acceleration and/or CTF. There's thousands of posts on this forum about Cut Through Forwarding, NAT acceleration, hardware acceleration and Broadcom. Try doing a search of this forum with Google.

Edit: I don't know what Broadcom calls their hardware acceleration in the AC68. I'm sure there are other users of the AC68 with highspeed connections that will chime in on how their router behaves with QOS enabled. I don't have those ISP speeds so I can't give you a confirmed answer.

Sorry but I am kind of a noob, so what do you mean by

I did a speed test and I inputted theses numbers, 324 down and 24 up. I have TW cable and I am running FW 3.0.0.4.376_2104.

With my old ac68r I was using merlin's FW, so maybe that might be the issue???

I have set up the ac68p just like my old ac68r. It's just weird???

Traditional QoS isn't compatible with HW acceleration, unlike Adaptive QoS. Therefore performance will drop if you enable QoS on the RT-AC68U.

I understand what you are saying Merlin, but with my old AC68U, I was able to use QOS and I would get the speeds that I get when I use QOS??

One thing I did notice was that if I enabled QOS, CTF 1 is still enabled. I remember when I enabled QOS on the AC68U that would change???

I dont know maybe I might flash it with your FW for the AC68U, and we will see what happens there?

Just for trouble-shooting purposes, put 999mbit (some number much larger than your actual download speed) into the download and see if your download improves.

Considering that the RT-N66U's 600mhz CPU can do ~200mbit with non-CTF QoS, shouldn't the RT-AC68P's 1ghz dual-core CPU be capable of more than 224mbit?

The Switch Control page does not show the current state of NAT acceleration, it's merely an option to force disable it. When traditional QoS is enabled, it will automatically disable HW acceleration at boot time.

The throughput will be impacted by anything that puts a load on the router's CPU. So if you have more complex firewall rules, the throughput will be reduced.

Raw throughput on the RT-N66U caps at around 150 Mbps, and 350 Mbps on the RT-AC68U. After that, anything that increases the complexity of the firewall rules will reduce the throughout even more. QoS rules, parental control, PPPoE, etc...

Mr. Merlin,

I am wondering if I should flash it with your FW, but if it does not work then how would I but back the Fw that came with the router. Since on the ASUS website there is really nothing about this router our than this.

Although I don't think the RT-AC68P is officially supported by Merlin, I think the RT-AC68U firmware should work just fine. If you search you will find a thread on this exact subject on this forum.

@pinkfloyd1173, did you trying flashing Merlin's FW? I too am considering an AC68P and would like to know if QOS works properly with it. I work from home and have to give my work laptop and IP phone highest priority at all times

I want to flash it BUT, if something goes wrong with merlins fw, there is no fw to fall back on. The ASUS web site they only have a page of this new routers features, no fw, no nothing.

What I dont get is the 68R/U, the QOS worked fine had no issues with it and was running merlins FW on it. Like I said on this thread my speed almost gets cut in half??? I get 324 down 24 up, with QOS 222 down 19 up???
 
I asked Asus, and they confirmed that the RT-AC68P uses the exact same firmware as the RT-AC68U. So people can safely flash either my firmware, or Asus's RT-AC68U firmware.

I will be labeling 376.48 as officially supporting the RT-AC68P.

Merlin, can we "downgrade" from the current 376 firmware on the 68P to 374? Any harm doing this? And if not, is it just a normal flash and factory reset?

Give it a try, worst case scenario you will have to reflash with a newer 376.xxx build from recovery mode.
