Try the suggested above change - ISP Gateway in Router mode. I'm surprised you never tried it by now. Your Asus router is most likely the issue. Some folks around replaced their own router with different brand/model after fighting with the same issue for months just like you.

I've put the ISP modem in Router mode. Added the Asus router in a DMZ. I'll see how that goes.

If this is a known issue with Asus, is there some workaround I can do with like a like a script or is this really a case of moving on to a better router? What is a good router with similar features that Merlin has on Asus?

I'll see how that goes

See how it goes first. Many folks are using this workaround, many folks don't have bridge mode on the ISP equipment available. They all continue using their Asus routers.

Small update. Been running the ISP modem in router mode with the Asus in a DMZ for the last 2 days 21 hours. No issues so far.

You're lucky to have ISP provided Gateway and not a Modem only. Otherwise when this issues happens you have to replace the router. We had a case like this not long ago, after few modem replacements the thread starter replaced the router with different brand/model.

There are variations of this issue, but most often ISP equipment incompatibility related.

For future readers. So my issue seems to be resolved. Switching the ISP provided XB7 modem into router mode was the solution.
