Hey everyone - I previously posted about some challenges I was having with my 3 node setup from BestBuy (read here). I'm going to focus on my current state, because I still can't put my finger on what my root cause is. Either way, I continue to experience regular network drops on WiFi when using the BE30000 mesh system.

Currently running Firmware 3.0.0.6.102_36736

Hardware & setup: Hitron CODA-45 Docsis 3.1cable modem (as an aside, I'm upgrading to AT&T Fiber when it comes to my area). One BE30000 connects directly to the cable modem over ethernet, and I use MLO backhaul to a second node about 50 feet away (good signal strength), and my third node connects using a MOCA adapter for an ethernet backhaul from node 2 (MLO) to node 3.

Within my home network, I have ~70 clients.

Today, I have irregular connection drops where I will lose internet access while still showing connected to the network. There is not a clear rhyme or reason to when these drops occur - but it manifests the same. The device will still show online/connected to wifi, but apps won't refresh and I won't be able to load a web page. It will start to load but 'hang' indefinitely. If I turn off wifi, then turn it back on, usually that will clear the issue and I'll be able to browse regularly. Wired devices don't ever seem to have an issue, only wireless devices. Sometimes, it happens when someone leaves the house. Sometimes it happens when moving from an areal close to one node to an area close to another. But not always, which makes recreating the issue difficult.

I previously had a bunch of cheap 'smart lights' that I have replaced with Philips Hue bulbs and the hub so they aren't showing as clients anymore.

As luck woudl have it, the issue is happening now. My iPhone 16 Pro Max is here with me - my wife left 20 minutes ago, and I'm still connected to my MLO SSID, but trying to go to a web page eventually throws an error that the server stopped responding. Now it shows that this wifi network has no internet connection though my phone still shows as a connection when viewing the router web page.

I called ASUS support - the chat always redirected me to Best Buy but calling Asus helped. We did a bunch of troubleshooting for 2 hours, with no resolution. Eventually the tech told me to use the Admin -> Feedback page to submit feedback to L2 tech support, including logs. I did that last week, and haven't heard back. I have no idea what the cause could be. Here are some screens / settings:

I'm not sure if turning on MLO is worth it, to be honest. WiFi 7 yes, because it enables 320 MHz bandwidth. (I've seen my OnePlus Open WiFi 7 phone connect to my BQ16 Pro, in AP mode with AiMesh, reporting a PHY rate of 51xx Mbps. This was with the phone literally a couple of inches away from the router though).

I would suggest changing the 2.4 GHz to Auto channel and 20/40 MHz bandwidth, and for 5 GHz check the check box for 160 MHz option. Why is the RSSI set to -69 dBm? All are set to -70 dBm by default.

EDIT- It may help to enable WiFi Agile MultiBand (WAM) on all channels since you have substantially more devices than I do, (roughly double).

I noticed my 2.4 GHz has Roaming Assistant enabled, same -70 dBm.

Mine setup is wired backhaul, but for your reference in case you would like to try...

Weird connection drops happened again today. Sometimes it would kill Zoom and sometimes it would kill everything else (browser, email, ping, etc) but zoom kept going.

Thanks for sharing - I'm going to try your settings. Applying today (while wifi goes down and up each time).

Noted bq16 pro firmware update has been released

I had so much issue with my setup, too...particularly with mobile devices when they would switch access points. My phone was constantly offline, despite saying it was connected. Drove me nuts.
I hate to admit it, but things finally calmed down once I did a full network reset (initiated by software). When I went through the setup process again, I tried to keep stuff closer to default. I think that did the trick, because now I'm having zero issue with being offline. I didn't change the firmware either. Just a good ol' reset. And not restoring from backup.

I ended up getting a replacement unit and it’s working better. One thing I noticed with this one is that 6GHz-2 was disabled by default on setup. Is this normal? Should I re-enable it or too much risk?

My laptop went offline today while sitting next to me and the only way to get it back was to turn wifi off and back on again. It gave me a DNS error (DNS_Probe_started) and my logs indicated it was deauthorized due to low signal. But it's 10 feet from one of the nodes, so not sure how that happens. The mac address is the one starting with 5a:be.

These are trash. I am about to return my second one. I’ll likely give it awhile before trying again. Switching back to eero and everything works instantly.

@Solar Trekker @dh4 I wish I have more time to investigate my suspected EMF/RF noise concern I had when I added a UPS, but I don't.

-7x dBm, -8x dBm, and -9x is very weak. Somehow I get the feeling from laptops/portable devices there's some sort of overzealous power saving feature that may be involved, or noise as I just mentioned...

I moved my single BQ16 Pro to above a door. I originally wanted it there, and this was before I learned 6 GHz is for indoor use only. At least the front yard of my parents' place is quite large, so the 6 GHz signal likely doesn't reach the street/beyond the yard... I noticed while I had it connected to the APC UPS that I could put my WiFi 7 phone within inches to the BQ16 Pro, get -2x dBm but the link speed the phone reported could be as low as single digit Mbps. I can't help but still worry about "noise"...

So... I noticed the BQ16 Pro gets the latest BIOS update, but ASUS deleted all other older BIOS from their support page. The BE30000 support page has a different latest BIOS, but they've left many older ones available....

I turned off roaming assist over the weekend and thought I had been in a more stable place, but I just lost network access (while my macbook showed connected to the wifi network still) in the middle of a zoom meeting - meaning TCP and UDP both lost connection.

No - still having intermittent issues. I can't nail exactly what the issue is.

I'm tired of turning on and off my device wifi multiple times per day. I've started grabbing wireshark captures during connectivity issues - it looks like I'll suffer from high packet loss (either wired or wireless) but am not sure about root cause.

Have you tried setting up the nodes as access points? I was experiencing random WiFi disconnections when connected to the nodes, after the switch WiFi is 100% stable.

Skypx… how do i do that? I have 2 BQ16’s (uk) one is ethernet backhauled via..i assume ai mesh …across 1 ssid for wifi. Is there step guide somewhere on best approach…not seen one.

Thanks

If your nodes are wired to the main router/BQ16 then Ethernet Backhaul Mode seems to help. AP mode is only available for wired nodes. OP is wireless backhaul, maybe Repeater mode...

The OFDMA/MU-MIMO and Beam forming settings look like they need manual configuration now that ASUS removed the WiFi 7 toggle...
