Asuswrt-Merlin 3.0.0.4.270.25 is out

Hi there,

I have a problem with my stats.
Have set it up to be written to the directory: /mnt/Freecom/traffic/

While this works for the global stats, it doesn't for the "per Device" one.

Syslog shows the following:

I have the same problem. I have tried all of Merlins suggestions and still get that error in my log and no per IP traffic data saves or is available.

Different NTFS driver. Asuswrt uses Paragon's proprietary (and much faster) driver, while Ubuntu uses the slower but open-sourced NTFS-3G.

Make sure the file does exist (cstats and rstats use different files), and check file permissions to ensure it's writable. If using a Linux filesystem, try making it 777.

If it still fails, delete it and create a new one, as it might be corrupted.

Now I got it...


After "Create or reset data files" one simply has to do the same for
"Create or reset advanced data files"

...and there it goes.


I now have both files:

tomato_cstats_50465dxxxxxx.gz
AND
tomato_rstats_50465dxxxxxx.gz


Maybe I'm just getting too old for all this computer stuff.

I was irritated by the log stating "Problem loading /mnt/Freecom/traffic/tomato_cstats_50465dxxxxxx.gz. Still trying..."
But it seems that it was actually missing the tomato_rstats-file instead.

If your disk is spinning up and down so often, then you need to change the timeout, otherwise you will reduce your disk's life expectancy. 5 mins is way too short.

You can't disable logging, and I won't make it possible either - logging is what might have just saved your hard disk from having an early death

Those of you having trouble in Android.... Are you running 4.2? If so it has inherent WiFi issues across many different routers. Mine has issues on the rt-n66u for sure. Downgrade to 4.1.... and issues are resolved. Sadly Google refuses to update whatever broke Wifi in 4.2

We have a Nexus 4 that was connecting in the 5GHz just fine till I "upgraded" from Merlin's 266.23b to 270.24. I had to switch the phone to the 2.4GHz band for it to connect afterwards. I've had other problems with .24 since, and will try .25b this weekend. Although it looks like I may have to revert to 23b where it seemed that everything worked without a problem in my setup.

You forgot to check the first place to check: the documentation included in the zipfile

You can always upgrade to a new version without having to erase your settings. The only exception is if you are coming from a MUCH older version, in which case it should still be fine to upgrade without resetting, but not recommended.

I just wanted to say thank you for the Experimental firmware which includes repeater mode support. I am using a second RT-N66U in repeater mode as a wireless bridge over 5ghz connected to my main RT-N66U. It works beautifully, I am reaching about 20 Mb/s (~160 MBit/s) over 5Ghz. Hats off to you.

I'm going to buy RT-N66U to replace my old Tomato WRT54GL. My primary interest is the WAN2LAN performance through router's OpenVPN server with TAP interface. I am going to choose between two alternatives - Asus Merlin and Tomato. Does your FW support the RT-N66U HW accelerator when using OpenVPN? I am asking this question as I learned that Tomato FW does not support the HW accelerator in both cases - with and without OpenVPN.

I never tested OpenVPN with HW acceleration enabled, since I have to keep it disabled for Per Device traffic monitoring. I see no reason for it to not work however, OpenVPN doesn't use any weird firewall rules.

My present configuration is WRT54GL with last version (1.27) of Keith Moyer's Tomato VPN. My home WAN connection is 50 Mbps download and 33 Mbps upload. I have a gigabit LAN cabling in my flat, so the Wi-Fi is normally used only by smartphones and other handheld devices. The desktop PC, NAS and laptops normally use wired connection to the router. My daughter studying abroad and also I am traveling a lot, so I configured the router as OpenVPN server and laptops as OpenVPN clients with TAP interface. I am using this to redirect all network traffic through home router during our trips abroad. Everything is working perfect during last three years but the Open VPN performance is not very good because of the weak router hardware. Recently I asked my daughter to make some speed tests with http://speedtest.net. The results (her client's University connection in UK now is about 100 Mbps) are as follows:

with VPN: 4.38 Mbps download, 2.43 Mbps upload
without VPN: 19.41 Mbps download, 21.04 Mbps upload

The first one is speed between her laptop and speedtest.net server in Bulgaria redirected through home OpenVPN server, the second one is between her laptop and the same server directly.

So the big question of particular importance for me is if the RT-N66U will SIGNIFICANTLY improve the OpenVPN server performance (TAP interface) comparing with old Linsksys WRT54GL? I know that the RT-N66U has 600 MHz 4706 CPU and 256 MB RAM, but I am not sure if this will improve significantly the speed compared with old Linsksys WRT54GL.

I will appreciate if you share your experience concerning WAN2LAN performance with OpenVPN. Especially I will be grateful if you share some RT-N66U test results similar to above.

P.S. I am not using QoS or other features disabling HW accelerator.

It seems to be I misunderstood the HW accelerator's function. I've thought that it deals not only with routing but also has some HW crypto functions. But nevertheless the HW accelerator may unload the CPU from "routine" routing work and let it to "focus" on crypto work. Your benchmark results are satisfactory for me comparing with my WRT54GL.

22 Mbit/s with AES is quite good! I've installed tinc thru entware and can only transmit 13 Mbit/s even thought it uses a less complex cipher that benchmarks higher than AES with OpenSSL. Could you integrate the tinc binary with the next versions of your firmware so that it could benefit from your optimizations?
