Unplug any USB devices from the router.

Unplug everything except the internet/WAN and the computer you're doing the upgrade from.

Reboot the router (use the power button or pull the power plug: don't use the reboot button in the UI).

After the computer has rebooted, wait a good 5 minutes, then do the firmware upgrade.

When it says it is finished - power cycle the router once more.

That seemed to work.
Many thanks

No, sorry. I had to build the firmware to test and didn't notice the new driver, lol.

Which router model are you testing?

In any case, don't touch the sdk5 branch for now, unless you're willing to spend time in recovery mode. The SDK update broke it, and after spending over two hours on it last night I still can't figure out which part of it is causing it. It seems related to CTF since the router will boot properly when CTF is disabled, but as far as I can tell I did revert back all the SDK-specific bits to 5.100, so I'm not sure what's left.

It was similarly tricky that first time I managed to get a working SDK5 build up and running. If it comes to worse, I might have to permanently disable CTF in the SDK5 build. That build is already a Frankenstein build, so there might be some interactions that can't easily be resolved.

What could be the cause of the router suddenly rebooting? I understand there is no debug loa anywhere unlike on Android? I installed arp watch from entware and the tower records every time I execute the command

upgrade fail

i am using 3.0.0.4.270.24 on the RT-AC66R. i am trying to upgrade to RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_374.35_4 but the upgrade keeps failing. any idea why it fails? or how to fix it? it says firmware upgrade fail.

Unplug all USB devices from the router.

Power off the router. Wait for 5 minutes. Restart.

Wait for 5 minutes for the router to stabilize - now, do a Restore to Defaults.

Do not do a reboot from the gui - power off the router manually after the Restore to Defaults completes.

Wait for 5 minutes with it off. Restart the router and wait for 5 minutes and now you should be able to update the firmware.

Is that the SDK-5 version of the firmware? That might be worth trying.

Or, the latest .36Beta 1 SDK5 version may help. Btw, not a beta anymore - just a label.

I just made a firmware upgrade for the N66U from 374.32 SDK6 build to 374.36 Beta1 SDK5 build.

As far as I know, it is strongly recommended to do a factory reset in case firmware upgrade causes a SDK change. But I restarted the rooter several times, tested and everything appears to be working ok.

Should I do a factory reset anyway?

Thanks in advance.

Can you go to an SDK5 beta build from an SDK5 stable build without having to hard reset?

Can you go to an SDK5 beta build from an SDK5 stable build without having to hard reset?

Not a problem, as long you aren't making a major jump and skipping more than 4 or 5 versions.

USB issue

Hello,

I followed all the instructions for the article: Improve Your Web Surfing Speed with OpenDNS, and successfully installed everything on my ASUS RT-N16. I am using the latest Merlin built 374.35_4

I tested the scripts under wan-start and it executes fine.

The issue i am having is with my USB Flash drive.
Its a 32gb drive formatted to EXT2. When i plug it in, the router recognizes it in fractions of second and its mounted and i can see all the files in it.
However, when i reboot the router the USB is not mounted or not shown. I have to manually unplug and plug it back in.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks
Judah
