USB 2.0 LED enabled (RT-AC68 into AP-Mode)

Hi,

upgraded to 374.35_2 and cleared nvram. Setup into AP-mode manually and enabled stealth mode.
Still have the issue, that after enabling stealth mode all LEDs are disabled, but after rebooting and waiting for ~5-7 secs the USB 2.0 LED will be enabled again (only happens after everytime I do a reboot and stays active until I reenable stealth mode or use the back on the back to disable all LEDs.

When I use a Merlin build,...

- The parental control don't work.
- I can't print on my printer (I need to restart the router)

When I use the Asus build, the parental control don't work, but my printer works good.

Parental control and WiFi connected printer works fine here. :)

I am still on 372.31 with my N66u. Should i upgrade to this version or the experimental sdk5 version?

That depends.
I need the better range from sdk5.
sdk5 doesn't give me any connection issues with the WiFi devices my family uses.

YMMV

Flashed last night my AC56U to 374.35.2 and here are my observations:

- after upgrading the FW (from 34.2), the UI told me to power cycle the router to reboot\
- after power cycle, it seemed to be fine, but nevertheless I cleared NVRAM and re-entered all the settings
- and then I tried to setup VPN... the new UI definitely has some quirks as it took me few attempts to set it up
- once you upload .opn file, there is NO indication in the UI that the file has uploaded correctly
- In short, even though I managed to get VPN to show as connected in the UI, I lost my internet access, and I was not able to restore it. Turning off the VPN helped to restore internet connection.
So OpenVPN client is not working for me... the simplification of UI did not work :(
- WiFi 2.4 GHz - just as bad as before, if not worse. With 34.2 I got to the point that when the laptop is one meter away from the router, it can hold 300Mbps connection. With 35.2, it fluctuates wildly - and this is after I "forgot" the network and re-established connection.

To summarize - with my very limited testing, for AC56U, .34.2 seems much better firmware. The only beef I have with 34.2 - I need to reboot it periodically as the internet seems to slow down over the time (could be crappy VDSL modem)

I have been running the newest stock FW on my AC56U for 2 weeks solid...no issues what so ever...and OpenVPN works perfectly....simple to setup and get running...I had played around with the OpenVPN in others firmwares(Merlin, Tomato, DDWRT, etc.) and could never figure how to get it to work...Asus made it so simple..

AC66u - when the 2.4ghz Channel bandwidth is set for 20/40 it will be only channel 6, not possible to change.
But when I set the bandwidth to 20 or 40 the channel selection works as normal.
Tried with two browsers, same result.
Anymore places to look?

This is an RT-AC66U (skyrealm) running 374.34_2, with one wall between the router and the client:

This is the same router, running 374.35_2:

http://www.lostrealm.ca/temp/rssi_35_2.png

Skyrealm68 is the RT-AC68U which was in the same room as the test laptop.

The only thing outside of the wireless driver that can affect it is the initialization code, which configures its power levels and timings. This code hasn't been changed either.

I wish there was a better (free) wifi scanner software out there than inSSIDer...i hate the way their newest version looks/works...i switched back to ver 2.1....and still have yet to find one that reports AC wifi correctly. I personally prefer PassMark WirelssMon.

Anyway, with my AC56U and my Samsung laptop, on 5g AC wifi...i get -38 where I normally use my laptop..about 6 feet away from router.

When i move to my living-room...about 30ft away and through a wall...its -58..

I don't use 2.4g..

Yeah, everybody's going connection issues, and yet I have none.

Probably because you only have a few compatible clients. I have 32 clients, a lot consisting of Foscam 2.4GHz N IP security cameras. I have no issue with any other 2.4GHz device, but the reception on my security cameras is terrible. I did not have any issues on my RT-N66U, just the RT-AC68U.

RMerlin, i really apreciate your work... but unfortunately for me, for RT-AC66U router, since 3.0.0.4_270.26b the WAN to LAN routing speed is slower than $20 routers. With 3.0.0.4_270.26b (that i MUST NOT REBOOT or i lose the speed) i get over 750Mbps on my PPoE internet connection, while using the latest 3.0.0.4_374.35_2 i get a poor 130Mbps. It's just 5 or 6 times slower!!! And this is unnaceptable!

I have also tried to contact Asus tech support, but they helped with nothing. I've said it before and i will say it again: i am amased an Asus flagship product is crushed by some chinese TPLink products that cost like 10 times less. For me, this is the last Asus router i will ever buy.

Again, i am sure it's not your fault, but Asus... I can't even try to hope you will be able to fix this, but if you can do something, please let us know.

I am attaching the benchmark results, to see how bad the situation really is.

does pppoe disable HW acceleration? thats crazy you get such a big loss between firmwares, luckily im sure the wifi would be just as good or better, initially i felt i had wifi issues with this new firmware, but i sorted it out. also got my qos problems solved. thx for the new firmware merlin! :)

This is a limitation to which I have no solution at this time. While I intercept every single calls in the firmware that turns that LED on, it seems the hardware itself can also turn it on without even going through the firmware code, leaving me with no way to intercept it.

When I use the Asus build, the parental control don't work, but my printer works good.

I've done zero changes to the printer handling code.
