NextDNS stock asuswrt vs Merlin, caching difference?

New Around Here
Hi,

previously I was running RT-AC86U with Merlin, and was using nextdns cli. I could quite easily fit my month DNS usage into the free 300000 monthly limit of NextDNS so I didn't need a paid plan.

Half way of November I updated my router to RT-BE86U. I'm currently running stock AsusWRT, which doesn't support nextdns cli so I have just configured the DNS servers and DoT in AsusWRT GUI settings.

Everything works, but now I hit the 300000 requests limit in 10 days. I see many requests are to blocked sites like doubleclick.net. Perhaps the nextdns program does something clever to cache those locally, even if their TTL is short? For blocked sites it's perhaps not necessary to respect TTL since they will be redirected anyway?

Here's a funny access graph from NextDNS.. On the left we have RT-AC86U with Merlin, then we see the graph go crazy after I installed RT-BE86U. :) It drops back to zero when it hits 300000 first at November and then at December, and now I've almost used my January quota.. :(

I will probably install Merlin just to get this working, but I'm perhaps waiting for the next release whenever it comes.

Is anyone using NextDNS with RT-BE86U, with Merlin or not? Similar experiences?
