RMerlin....sorry to bug you...I know you mentioned you're waiting on the new GPL for the latest asus FW released... is this something you think we should be worrying about in the near future? Or once the GPL is realeased we can have a better picture on how it may affect all of us? Basically should we be concerned?

I can't answer that until I actually see the source code.

I tried it out for a few days now with self compile/merge, the only issue I saw was the ability to turn on and off updates checks has been removed.

That option isn't available by default, it must be enabled at build time. I keep it disabled by default to prevent fork compilers from hitting my update server with bogus requests.

What is different between 384.11_1 and 384.12 alpha1 for the AX88U ?

384.12_alpha 1 is from the current development branch I've been working on in parallel while finalizing 384.11_2.

Code:
merlin@ubuntu-dev:~/amng$ git log 384.12 --oneline
b22e061684 (origin/384.12, 384.12) wsdd: generate ID from the kernel's boot-id instead of hashing the MAC (patch from OpenWRT)
c1ab39dce7 rc: implement wsdd stop/start alongside Samba
80971f456b wsdd: implement Asus-specific code, enable build recipe
d03c883c50 wsdd: add build recipes
c4ca06e988 wsdd: initial commit
51f335297f webui: use client_functions's function for client dropdown list
23d2be630e others: fix installation of the two new updown scripts for OpenVPN
b5e01a0fa9 webui: re-enable option to extend TTL value
c2dafd1c3a webui: display hostnames on Classification page
b56e39ff5a openvpn: rework the updown.sh handling for OpenVPN clients
7a9da3fd1a openvpn: move openvpn-event script calling for server into an updown script
f755291b81 nano: updated to 4.2 (closes #303)

Any fixes still pending for 384.11_2 or is it done if we don't have issues with .11_1?

384.11_1 contains everything I had lined up for 384.11_2 for now. I just wanted a bit of additional testing before finalizing in case the numerous ntpd patches might have broken something.

I've updated my 87U to 348.11_1, the ntp Refid is still showing ool-43544400.dyn.optonline.net so the patches haven't fixed that, not seeing other problems.

- NEW: Implemented source/destination IP filtering for the Netool version of Netstat web page.
Speaking of that page, 384.11 final has a html error where the script block at the end is outside the body tag.

Edit: and a stray span tag at line 162.

@RMerlin A curiosity: which is the best asus router that fits best and with better performance with FW Merlin? I am in doubt of the purchase between the AC86U vs AC3100

I'm not merlin, but I can tell you that the AC86U has a faster cpu (1.8 vs. 1.4 GHz).
And I like that both USB ports on the AC86U are on the back (AC3100 has one on the front).
I don't know if you'll benefit from the 4th external antenna (the 4th antenna of the AC86U is internal) of the AC3100 though.
just my two cents.

edit: ac3100 is not ac88 (my bad) thanks @L&LD

I noticed this with the first reboot after update, but afterwards everything ran smoothly with following reboots.
Correct!! I rebooted this morning and all is well! Nice build no worries here. :D

I don't know if you'll need the 8 LAN ports or benefit from the 4th external antenna (the 4th antenna of the AC86U is internal) of the AC3100 though.

Another vote for 86u unit. Own two and they are great units.

If you're planning on using the router to connect to a VPN service definitely get the AC86U over the AC3100. I own both and upgraded my main router from the AC3100 to the AC86U and saw my VPN performance increase by about 8x.

Ok so I flashed the merlin compile (over the one I self compiled couple of days earlier), one thing i am noticing is that I lost internet right the upgrade. I am thankful I had SCMERLIN @Jack Yaz , but I ran top command and notice it was hanging between two things "Network Map Booting" and "stubby" were both fighting for preference.

After using scmerlin to reboot DNS/DHCP server, the internet started to work with no issues. will attempt a reboot later and see if things are back to normal.

Small correction above. The RT-AC3100 has 4 LAN ports, not 8. That is the RT-AC88U which is otherwise identical. :)

I also recommend the RT-AC86U above the RT-AC3100 for the long term today. The one area where the RT-AC3100 stands out for me is the range of the signal, even if the RT-AC86U still has higher throughput.

Overall, the RT-AC86U is a very powerful router, particularly when paired with a USB drive and given a swap file + amtm, Diversion, Entware and pixelserv-tls, and all the other great scripts too. :)
