OK, I got the time zone figured out. The "Default Gateway" was not being saved even though it showed after reboot. I reset to factory default and reconfigured it, first reboot then default gateway was missing, reentered it and it held. rebooted again and still held. :D

It was a USB stick that I had connected (16 Gb Verbatum). Is there an issue with USB storage in general or just certain brands of USB?

If it's formated in NTFS or FAT32 then plug it to a PC, and do a chkdsk on it to ensure the filesystem is clean. Then make sure you eject it from Windows before unplugging it.

If you have video or music files on it then make sure the Media Server is disabled under USB Apps -> Servers. Could be the media server scanning causing issues. Also I recommend not installing Download Master - the first thing it will do is automatically share anything in the Download folder over the Edonkey (eMule) network. That will introduce performance issues.

Not a problem for me to fix since it doesn't happen to anyone else, it's most likely something with your setup. Did you wipe your settings back to factory default and reconfigure everything manually as recommended? Also make sure you flash the firmware for the correct device - flashing the wrong firmware can cause boot loops.
 
The new RT-AC66U that I set up as Access Point is not displaying the time correctly for my Time Zone "(GMT-09:00) Alaska" even after reboot.

I also have this on ADMIN>SYSTEM page; * Remind: The System time zone is different from your locale setting. :confused:

NTP is not supported in AP mode.

The first log entry is the ipt_account Netfilter module used for Per IP accounting.

The second one is related to the Kernel component named in the line just before that which you did not post. It's just your typical author ownership message from one of the Kernel components, a lot of Kernel component also lists the name and email address of the person who developed or maintains that specific Kernel component.
 
Another issue I see is that on my original router, it only sees 14 clients on the network map page and the circle keeps going round and round.
The New unit configured as an access point sees all 18 clients and is much faster finding them.
Should I update the bootloader CFE on my original router???

The CFE only handles booting the router, initializing the hardware and providing a recovery environment. There is usually no real need to update it, and I would advise against it. It's possible that a new CFE version was designed to handle a hardware design change in a certain revision. For example, a newer pcboard might be using a different brand of RAM, requiring different timings to be initialized by the CFE. Running the wrong CFE in such a case could potentially terminally brick your router.

Networkmapping can take longer especially if the router doesn't have name resolution working - the router will spend a LOT of time trying to resolve each hostnames one after another. It will typically also only display devices it is responsible for. An AP or repeater environment might not always list devices which are connected to another router if it has no knowledge of them (for example if they never sent any traffic to a device connected to that second router).

How do I tell if the routers "Name Resolution" is working properly. It does appear to resolve the names of the devices on the NetworkMap page, it just takes it a long time and doesn't see all of the devices that the AP sees.

No, the time will always be obtained from whichever ntp server is set. The main problem while running in AP mode is that the router does not have a "real" WAN interface, since it works as a client for the other router. People generally are generally unable to have their AP connect to the NTP server. It's possible however that it might now work while in AP mode due to the change I did to web redirection handling.

The kernel entries will show whatever the mode in which you run the router, since that output comes from the Linux kernel and not from the firmware.

Each device will maintain its own list of devices. I haven't done much tests in AP mode so I'm not 100% sure as to whether it will be able to see any device that generates traffic to the AP-connected clients, or only the devices directly connected to the AP.

The routers don't talk to one another as to which devices are visible. Networkmap uses the device's own arp cache to determine what clients it knows about.

So after my first post here in this thread I experienced something of a network intrusion for the whole day (my WLAN experiments may not have been such a good idea), and in the process I figured I might as well take the plunge with the merlin-build and beta.

Are these the N-issues?

First I re-flashed (nvram, recovery-mode) to the same exact build I was supposed to have been at, the 354, but oddly the UI did not look exactly the same as before, even if the version strings matched. Things "worked", but I began experiencing some painful delays to get connected to Wi-Fi at N, random disconnects, a bunch of things I remember being symptomatic of this 354-and-N issue everyone's been on about. If I wasn't sure before, I had no choice at this point but to go ahead with the merlin build--

--which got me realizing that those problems could have been due to the last flash having been incorrect: make SURE (unlike me) that even after it says the upload is complete, you still wait until the other LED lights come back to life...

What I'm loving:

  1. that I could SSH with keys for some convenience/security/scp/etc.
  2. that you can disable password logins entirely so that you can get in from WAN with your key
  3. i didn't at all like how the original hosts file set aliases for router.asus.com and asusnetwork (thought it was dangerous) so I loved using /jffs/config to patch that.
  4. event-triggered emailing guide was great (used JangoSMTP)
  5. transmission (by guide) was a breeze, except for my mistake in using commented-out lines in settings.json (not valid)
  6. upon quick glance, site survey did its job, nothing stood out

A few issues:

  1. Also saw an extra spinner next to the client list's Refresh button on Network Map view (by and large, webui pages appear to be loading slower, with a significant delay after the first load and the subsequent content injection), but largely resolved with QoS i think
  2. The post-mount script's "ln -sf $/entware /tmp/opt" I think should be "-nsf" to override any existing link for users who had it installed before
  3. I did, in fact, experience a painful spell of wifi issues, but it was on one computer, and I'm thinking it has to do with DNS+AdBlock+privoxy...

Generally:

  1. Is there a particular reason why letting the router's cert get regenerated each reboot might be preferable to a user pre-creating/-assigning the ca/cert/key? (for web-ui)
  2. Not specific to the merlin build (saw it on stock 354 too) but the fact that having an open page on webui means my machine is constantly streaming data is a little annoying (svg traffic graphs?)
  3. A short while ago someone else had expressed confusion over not being able to consume the stored log files (can't tail those binaries), but I just wanted to check that the separately stored log aggregates don't generate many files for each IP, or a new file with each new "period" (i only see two files in the designated USB drive)
  4. Really, for me, the only significant trouble is with understanding how each of the DNS settings work together--if someone has a good grasp of this, would love to pick your brain
  5. RMerl, for future reference, is there a preferred way to note these things, gh issue, a pull request? I could at least touch up the gh-wiki pages a little.

P.S. Forgot to confirm the similar experience of the router failing to boot if it had trouble reading from the USB drive (no wifi, etc). Turning router off, unplugging drive once router started up again on its own took it through some steps including a self-repair, then it mounted as an sdb device. Normal restart set it back to sda.

Thank you for the feedback. These forums are the best place for them, I prefer the Github tracker to be reserved for confirmed bugs - makes it easier for me to manage it.

Traffic monitoring will only generate two files (if you have both regular and Per IP monitoring enabled), one per type of monitoring.

The SSH cert stuff is the unmodified code coming from either Asus or Tomato. I never really looked at that code as there hasn't any pressing need to spend time on it.

The LAN port ordering is already fixed.

I'll re-test Guest Networking. It should work since this is Asus's unmodified code however, and I even have one of my own customers running an RT-N16, my firmware, and a Guest network.
 
Hi noob here. I just got an N66U recently and first thing I did was flash the latest Merlin beta on it after hearing a lot of good things about it. I made sure to reset my router to factory default settings first before flashing and made sure the fw was finished flashing completely before attempting to start configuring it.

Everything was working fine and it took me a while to configure my Wifi settings just right to get a good signal and not overcrowd any channels. However I noticed random disconnects while connected with the 5ghz channel. 2.4ghz seems to be fine.

I was wondering if its because I set the bandwidth to 40mhz on both freqs. I have 2.4ghz set to Auto for wireless mode and 40mhz for channel bandwidth. My 5ghz is set to N Only for wireless mode and also 40mhz for channel bandwidth. I set 2.4 to 40mhz because that allowed my girlfriend's 2.4ghz only laptop to connect at 300mbps. If I set it to 20/40mhz, she only connects at 130mbps, which is pretty terrible for file transfers. Could setting both freqs to use 40mhz cause interference with each other? Not sure if its because I'm using the beta or what. I'm going to try the latest stable version to see if there any issues. Sorry for the ignorance but I don't know much about wireless frequencies.
 
In general, 270.26b. But your experience might vary based on which router you have, which clients you have, etc...

I'm having some real issues with the WiFi connection using both 3.0.0.4.354.27 BETA and 3.0.0.4.354.28 BETA on my Asus RT-AC66U.


I'm connected to my MacBook Pro 15" Retina model using 5.0GHz 802.11n 3x3 450mbps connection and it's dropping out several times a day now.

It's not due to poor reception, I'm in a small space with a range of approximately 4-8 meters from the router at all times, resulting in Mac OS X Mountain Lion normally reporting 450mbps connect at all times.

I've tweaked the settings somewhat, putting it in N-only mode, AES only, OFDM 54 multicast rate, Short Preamble, 80 beacon interval, TX Bursting, Multicast Forwarding and WMM APSD all enabled and 200mW Tx power.


This are the same settings I've been running all along, and with pervious firmware prior to the 354 branch I didn't really have much problems, perhaps a few random drops out each month at most, now it has become a daily thing.
