Looks like you have an issue with VPN client 3 per the log file. Starts with this line:
Jun 8 14:01:07 rc_service: httpd 1852:notify_rc start_vpnclient3
So, what is VPN client 3? Do you have a VPN Client 3 enabled? If so who does VPN Client 3 connect to? Does anyone else have access to the router? Are the WiFi networks locked down with secure passwords? Are any rogue network clients connected via wired LAN or WiFi?
If the router has been compromised you should remove any attached USB hard drive, then do a hard factory reset and then do a manual configuration (do not import a previously saved router CFG file). If you use a USB drive on the router may want to check that drive (or erase, repartition and reformat it) in case it has been compromised. Edit: One may want to reflash the latest Asus or Asus Merlin firmware just in case.

vpn client 3 is strictly for a streaming device (shield tv)
client 3 was enabled however the shield device was off
I'm the only one with access to router
WiFI is locked down with what I believe is a strong password
no devices attached to the router, just a simple set up
is a network switch a rogue device?
not sure how to tell if the router is compromised
and
thanks for taking some time

What is VPN Client 3 connecting to? A VPN service or to some else's personal VPN server, like another router?

Going further back in the system.log file you appear to have a VPN client 1 being activated and trying (and possibly failing) to connect to something about 15 minutes earlier than VPN client 3.
Jun 8 13:44:33 rc_service: httpd 1852:notify_rc restart_vpnclient1

Edit: And VPN client 1 tries connecting (and appears to fail) a few times earlier as well.

should I be concerned that all the client info was deleted?

anyone else seeing the router constantly sending a request to dns.msftncsi.com every minute or so? network monitoring dns query and ping are off everywhere I checked...
i been using this every since I had the same issue, dns.msftncsi.com 131.107.255.255 112.4.20.71 fd3e:4f5a:5b81::1 with it turned on. Seemed to work.

Post this little inconsistency here cause its too dumb to open a specific thread, even if its not 388.7 related as I recall seen it to on 388.6 (first version ever used on this device).
May be its dragged from asus code indeed.

USB Mode is showed as USB 3.0 both on 3.0 and 2.0 ports.
Is that expected behaviour, a bug, or am I misunderstanding something?
Conducted a search but couldn find the answer.

Others, including myself, noticed the same in prior Asus-Merlin firmware. For example some discussion on it in the Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.5 release discussion starting with the following post link and continuing for several additional posts in that firmware discussion.
https://www.snbforums.com/threads/a...8-5-is-now-available.87874/page-8#post-879708

Did a quick and dirty check of two RT-AC68U's. One running Asus 3.0.0.4.386_51685 and the other running Asus-Merlin 386.13. Neither exhibit this behavior with the USB2.0 port when USB drives (both USB 3.0) are attached to the ports.
usb 3.0 is backwards compatible with usb 2.0

usb mode 3.0 of which is using usb 2.0 i presume
The behavior is the USB 2.0 port on the router showing the USB Mode option for USB 3.0. Here is an example (from the earlier firmware discussion I linked to) in the spoiler tag on a RT-AX86U Pro that has a single USB 3.0 and a single USB 2.0 port showing the USB Mode indicating a USB 3.0 option for the USB 2.0 port.

This behavior is not exhibited on a RT-AC68U (which likewise has a single USB 3.0 port and single USB 2.0 port) running either the latest stock Asus firmware or the latest Asus Merlin firmware. Example of the RT-AC68U 386.13 in the spoiler tag.

It’s not actually a per-device setting, it’s global. It’s the same setting you would change on the Administration / System page. There’s only one. The panel on the main page shows the setting without regard for the type of USB port selected.

Probably the case with the 388 firmware. But it is not exhibited on the 386.x firmware (at least in the latest Asus and Asus Merlin firmware for the RT-AC68U). See my reply above for screen shot example in a spoiler tag from an RT-AC68U running 386.13.

It’s model-dependent. Here is the very long if statement to determine whether to show or hide the USB option.
The AC68U only shows it for the first port. Other recent models show it for both ports.

Ah interesting, that explains the difference. Still a bit strange to see the USB 3.0 option on the USB 2.0 port. Which as we've seen more than once has caused people to ask about it.

Thanks, this clarifies the issue.
Agree with Bennor that it is indeed a bit strange to see the USB 3.0 option on the USB 2.0 port.
Maybe on devices with only 1x usb3 and 1x usb2 (ie ax6000), it would be clearer to show that info only on the usb3 port info, but I guess there might be a smarter reason I'm not seing to keep it just the way it is settled now.
