Ok, call me crazy but i didn't do the factory reset on my Ac68u & everything has been running fine. Should i though ?

Did you come from 378.56_2. Is there a reason that Asus doesn't suggest that we factory reset when upgrading to this base, but RMerlin says we have to?

For me, flashing and manually rebuilding all of my settings on 2 different routers will take a good amount of time, plus easy chance i miss a setting i need. Also have a lot of static dhcp entries to redo.

Any reason not to use John's User Settings NVRAM Save/Restore Utility to do the job for you?

Thought I would FYI since some are have issues with AC68U. I have flashed thru alpha's & now 380.57.0 without doing a factory reset. I am in the US, I have not has any issues with either 2.4 or 5.0 wireless, speed tests have remained the same for me, range is the same. Please note I do have adaptive QOS turned on to eliminate bufferbloat when testing via DSLreports/speedtest which caps my download & upload speeds to 103 & 20. I have found if I turn off Adaptive QOS or set speeds higher bufferbloat is not eliminated. I pay for 105/20 with Comcast. When running speedtest from speedtest.net I get the same speeds. I can get higher speeds, 120/25, via speedtest.net with Adaptive QOS off but when I test the same way via DSLreports/speedtest speeds drop dramitically due to bufferbloat not being managed.

so I tried a different USB 3 thumb drive and it worked just fine, so it must have something to do with the Sandisk drives themselves, I have a few Sandisk drives and tried them all, none worked, so I am now using a Transend Jetflash USB 3 drive, which works fine.

I am a tad stumped.

Have you tried reformatting the Sandisk USB stick? I think that most (all?) Sandisk sticks now ship with a pre-installed encryption option and that may be confusing the basic USB support in the router.

I really don't know if that would be something worth pursuing or not. I guess if someone wanted to take the time to test very single channel on the list to see if by chance the internet starts working again on a broken 2.4 GHz band, it would be good to know.

But I brought this change up more to suggest the possibility that perhaps the changes made in this area somehow managed to screw up the 2.4 GHz internet connection on a large number of non-EU based 68Us and their variants.

That change was the ONLY 2.4 GHz related item listed in the same firmware update that consistently breaks the 2.4 GHz band on a significant number of previously fully functional routers. As I relayed in my experience, this latest FW version broke the 2.4 GHz band's internet connection

Flashing back to the previous version that does not include this minor change to the 2.4 GHz band for EU based routers returns the 2.4 GHz band to full working order on all routers that break under 380.57 and ASUS's own 1031 which is incorporated into this latest version of Merlin.

It just struck me as an interesting coincidence that we see the first 2.4 band change in this version's release notes, and at the exact same time, 2.4 bands start breaking after installing the same piece of firmware.

Back when Broadcom released SDK6 for the RT-N66U, it caused very odd behavior for me on the 5GHz radio making it unusable. Resetting to factory defaults did not make any difference. I stuck with firmware that used the SDK5 drivers for months. After several newer firmware releases with the SDK6 driver of which I always tried every one hoping the problem woud go away but it never did, I randomly decided to change the channel for the 5GHz radio while using the SDK6 driver. The problem went away and never returned. Something in NVRAM must have conflicted with the SDK6 driver and was not cleared when resetting. It was only after changing the 5GHz channel that whatever bad data existed in NVRAM was overwritten.

In conclusion, I am not saying changing the 2.4GHz channel is a fix for those having a problem with the RT-AC68U and the new driver. The problem may be that something in NVRAM is not being cleared and is therefore causing problems with the 2.4GHz radio for some people. If someone knows how to wipe NVRAM better than resetting to factory defaults, that may be the fix for this issue.

Resetting from the GUI as mentioned in the linked post did not fully erase NVRAM as my experience would imply. However, the post in general is quite good for those less informed than I.

Apparently and maybe certain country codes.

All I know is that any absolute conclusions are a bit presumptuous.

Some are having no issues, like myself and others, some are having all kinds of issues.

Mine and my son-in-law's 1ghz 68U, the B1's, are working great with RMerlin's 380.....

iPhones, wireless clients, Apple TV, etc. all fast, stable and easily connect. Sony wireless bluray too.

I have mine OC'd to 1200 too.

We don't do VPN, not doing PPOE, etc. Straight cable modem.

I have USB 3.0 drive attached to mine. Works great.

I have IPV6 on as well and have IPV6 IP address/dns. My clients don' use it much. But its thereon the WAN side and for clients that use IPV6, they are working fine. Such as the laptop I'm using right now.

Son-in-law not using IPV6.

I did a full reset prior to and again after installing the 380 alpha. Have not since.

Yes I have reformatted with EXT2 and EXT4 (just to see if it made any difference, but it didn't), I usually format on the router with EXT2 for my USB sticks using 'mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda1', with no issue's, then check the disk with 'e2fsck -fv /dev/sda1', but the Sandisk USB 3 drives have never been an issue, except since this update.

This time round I could not format on the router (the drives simply are not recognized), so I threw them into one of my Linux servers and formatted that way using the same formatting sequence.

They are simply not recognized what so ever, but if I put in the Transend USB 3, it's recognized it right away.

It is a strange one indeed. Thanks for your input John.
