Linux filesystems have user/group permissions, just like NTFS has such a thing under Windows. However Linux doesn't enforce Windows permissions out of the box, as it's based on a completely different ACL model.

Hi,

For Samba you can configure which Linux permission newly created directories and files will get with setting smb.conf:

force directory mode = 0777
force create mode = 0777

You can use the /jffs/config folder to add or even replace (as I did) the settings in smb.conf.
Detail about user scripts/config can be found on Merlin's wiki.

I have an N66U router that I never upgraded- still at 3.0.0.3.90 - Would like to upgrade to a stable much newer release - suggestions as to stay with ASUS or flip to Merlin- Also where to find flash procedure for this early a release (I think there was a change that required a different procedure if you had a very early release #)

I would go with Merlin build 374.42_0 its his latest build and seems to be solid. Merlin build for the N66 works for all versions of that router so no issues there. You can find the firmware at the link below, download and unzip and flash. Make sure you do a full factory reset and reconfigure your router from scratch after the upgrade that will be needed when going from the version you have now to the latest. Good Luck !!

hah I still using 372.31 on my router, I cant bring my self to write down 30+ mac address I have on the allow list for wifi, or all the QOS settings i have set or the many other settings i have set.

and re input them all manual just to upgrade the firmware. cause i have to factory reset after a upgrade.

That is totally your choice but I would not recommend it there are many security issues that have been addressed since the version you are using. If your comfortable with that then enjoy.

Take screenshots of the router pages. It makes a pain in the arse an easy task.

Wifi mac allow list is useless as wifi mac spoofing is easy and anyone can do it.

Wpa2 and turn off wps is enough.

That may be a slight exaggeration, I would be very surprised if more than 10% of the world's population had the slightest idea what a MAC address was. Of those only a tiny percentage would attempt it.

That's probably much truer but I'm not sure that's absolute.

short answer yes- you could install 374.42_2.. which is the latest.. but 374.42 is a great build..

EDIT: 374.42_2 is now available for the RT-AC56 and RT-AC68, addressing the Time Machine issues.

That is correct. PLUS you will not find 374.42_2 in the N66U section.

Just installed 374.42_2

On Advanced_WAN_Content.asp page, it does not toggle the rest of the page settings as it was before, when you toggle WAN Type selection box. Tried 3 different browsers. Both Cable and DSL still works but it is now a bit confusing now, if I had 2 DSL or 2 Cable, I wouldn't be able to configure them properly.

If somebody else mentioned this before, sorry... couldn't browse through all in this thread.

Any suggestions?

Well I think you have to look at it as one more layer in a defense in depth strategy. I wouldn't do just MAC filtering, but why wouldn't you use it along with the other things you can do? Why omit something that can be an additional speed bump?

I use WPA2, a MAC allow list, limited IP addresses with static DHCP reservations, and lock down the router options/configuration in an appropriate way.

The point he was trying to make was.......

The person he responded to is using 372.31 firmware which is old and has lots of security vulnerabilities. It defies logic and rational thought to insist upon using a generally unnecessary speed bump as a reason for not wanting to update the firmware, reset to defaults and reconfigure from scratch.

Paranoia can unfortunately disrupt and override logic.

I have a western digital live tv and with latest merlin .42, it takes an extremely long time before it finds wifi! But with .41 merlin finds the wifi really fast, why does this happen?
