I too have just purchased an AC88U and updated it to the latest ASUS FW (3.0.0.4.380.1354)

Would flashing to Merlin 380.57 be detrimental and re-introduce some bugs that had been squashed in the latest ASUS release?

No. If anything it's other way around. Merlin's code is more refined then asus. Asus uses merlin's code bug fixes and implements them months later. If you search the threads you will see that. Asus thanked Merlin for working on it. If you wanna make sure use asus for few weeks then flash merlin and decide for yourself. Flashing firmware on asus is so easy via web. I've must have flashed like 7 times already lol.

Could I query something please.
Merlin's release is based on: 380_1031 GPL

If I look on Asus website they are up to: Firmware version 3.0.0.4.380.1354

Does that mean Merlin's firmware is a little outdated already?

(Not trying to point fingers I know he is busy, just trying to understand how the releases work)
I'm just curious as I just got a AC88U and there seems to be some good fixes for it in the latest firmwares by Asus.

Of course it's outdated. Every firmware that hits 'release' or 'final' is. Even Asus' own firmware (or any other manufacturer for that matter).

When and if the newest Asus firmware offers substantial benefits and also coincides with RMerlin's schedule, a new RMerlin firmware will be released then.

There is simply no other way to do it unless Asus hires RMerlin and he becomes responsible for releasing firmware officially for Asus instead.

Attempted to login to SSH via WinSCP on my new AC-87U this afternoon, but couldn't authenticate even after trying several times. Definitely got the username and password correct as it was copied and pasted from a password manager, and can login to the router's web interface using the same method.

Is there any specific requirement of the SSH login process that I may be missing, such as password length? It's quite a long one, as it was generated by the password manager.

Also, I neglected to reset the router to defaults after I flashed from factory firmware to merlin. Could it be that?

Does the WinSCP log window appear...is it populated with authentication messages?

..and are you sure the WinSCP session is configured for the SCP protocol rather than the default SFTP?

..........

Before you do anything else, you must restore to factory default settings (RFDS), which, as you say, you should have done after flashing with Merlin, and then manually reinstate your settings. If you have already set many changes from defaults, you might want to go through all (or most) of the gui tabs and take screenshots; if not, a pen and paper should suffice. Screenshots are sometimes unexpectedly very handy and worth the time spent 'collecting'.

I can't remember if it was with WinSCP, but I ran into a similar snag; it turned out that the "£" special character in my password was causing the problem. Ever since then, I avoid special characters in such programs.

Special characters or not, you need to sort the factory default out, otherwise you'll never be sure of the cause of any other glitches, plus you'll waste time troubleshooting only to have to RFDS anyway. Sooner the better.

Modded firmware always stands a very big chance of being outdated. It's a responsive job and Asus has more resources than the Merlin one man show

That's not true. If all ports are being forwarded correctly (through upnp or manually) you should see Open NAT on the Xbox One.

there are only 3 nat types
Open/Nat 1= no router/dmz
Moderate/Nat 2=router
Strict/Nat 3= usual happens if router is to strick and or more then 1 router

I have a bit of an issue.
On a AC88U, on WTFast when I click apply (to apply the settings I select) it straight away logs me out of the router.
I log back in and no changes were made.
Consistently does this over and over so I cant make any changes.

Actually it seems as soon as I log into the WTFast page on the router that's it, it kicks me off the actual router itself.

Have you tried a different browser and/or a different device to log in?

What if you stop using the router name (host name) and use the IP address? Does it work then?

Having upnp working correctly, or manually forwarding the ports is the same as your no router / dmz scenario. If you have things configured correctly in your router you should be able to see Open/NAT 1 on the Xbox One and in game like Rainbow Six Siege.

Moderate / NAT 2 simply means that you have a router that is not forwarding all the required ports correctly, or not at all.

In this firmware samba (share) not worked after router restart. Same bug already was in old fws... helps only service restart in web. But it's not good solution.

In 380.50 thread on first page same error&log. Not fixed yet?

I know this question is probably somewhere already but I couldn't find it.

From which original firmware is the final version is originated?

Thank you

Well the latest Asus Firmware update is still at 378.xx
Does that mean my router out of date?
How can it be originated from 380.xx if the latest one is 378.xx ?
