anyways - router/AP's have to have a tolerance for stability - and this is for both ethernet and wifi to work properly...

busybox/sysntpd is good enough - 30 ppm there...

I'm having to sort 50 ppb at the moment...

Busybox ntpd cannot be queried by ntpq, unless I'm missing something?

That is correct - ntpclient is suggested as a companion app if one needs to collect stats

Is that not what the firmware used prior to busybox ntpd? If so, it doesn't help with this script.

Before using this script (many thanks, Jack Yaz) I was using the old NTP daemon installation by @kvic. Installation of the new script gave me a second tab named NTP Daemon. Seeing that the new script works perfectly I tried to uninstall the old version and did everything from the removal instructions apart from the last item

rm -rf  opt var www

because I did not know if this would break something. Now the old NTP Daemon tab is still under Tools but gives a 404 error. How do I get rid of the tab? Do I really have to remove the whole directory?

P.S. I was unable to submit this posting with the slashes in the path...

Then you may have to reinstall Jack Yaz’s ntpMerlin.

The last step (removing the www directory) was my concern - will it be populated again after a reboot?

A clone of /www mounted on the usb is not required by my script so can be removed

I just re-read the removal instructions and then again the installation procedure - and realized that it tells me to remove the copy of www which I had created by myself during the installation

but I would be using this in the NTP Merlin config file

An incorrectly set timezone on your router would be my first guess. NTP doesn't know anything about timezones. It only deals with UTC, each computer determines the "local" time by adding the local UTC offset to the time served by NTP. I'm near Los Angeles, and it's Daylight Saving Time now, so my offset is UTC -7; if it's 15:00 UTC, it's 15:00 - 7 = 08:00 here.
